What is DSL?
Digital Subscriber Line, or DSL, is the newest, fastest, and
most convenient Internet access available for home users and small businesses.
DSL runs over your standard voice phone line, and you can use it and talk
on the phone at the same time. With DSL, there's no need for a second phone
line.
How fast is DSL?
DSL is being offered in 5 different service tiers:
- DSL Lite - 256k download / 128k upload
- Tier 1 - 1.5M download / 384k upload
- 3.0M/384k - 3.0M download / 384k upload
- 6.0M/384k - 6.0M download / 384k upload
- SDSL - 512k download / 512k upload
- 3.0M/768k - 3.0M download / 768k upload
Combined with lower latency and an all-digital path, DSL provides
throughput up to 50 times faster than a 28.8kbps modem.
DSL is connected constantly, so you never have to wait for your computer to
make a connection, saving you even more time.

We are currently taking orders for DSL in all of these areas.
Place your orders with this
DSL Order Form.
Note that not all locations in every city will be eligible to receive
DSL service. Distance and line quality limitations can make DSL inoperative
for some locations. Alltel will perform a line quality check after your order
is placed to help determine if you can receive DSL.
What are the computer requirements for DSL?
For DSL connections, we support PC-compatible computers running Windows 95
or Windows 98, or Macintosh computers running Open Transport (TCP/IP) 1.1.1
or higher. Windows 3.1 is not supported.
Computers running other operating systems such as Linux and Windows NT should
also work as long as they have a network card and are able to obtain their IP
address via DHCP. However, technical support for these computers will not be
provided by Internet Nebraska.
How does DSL compare to other high speed technologies?
DSL blows away ISDN in both performance and cost. Since your DSL line
is always connected, there are no additional connect-time fees as there
are with ISDN. DSL's speed leaves ISDN's 64k or even 128k in the dust.
How much does DSL cost?
There are several different components that make up the total cost of
DSL: the initial installation fee, the hardware, the DSL line cost, and
the Internet service.
Initial Installation
The telephone company charges an initial activation fee of
$100. For personal-use DSL, there is no start-up charge from Internet
Nebraska. Some corporate plans may have a start-up fee,
see the DSL Pricing Guide for more information.
Alltel also offers periodic promotions where the DSL activation fee is waived. We encourage
you to take advantage of these special offers.
Hardware
For DSL access, you will need a DSL modem installed in your computer or a
DSL router. If you are using a DSL router you will also need a 10baseT
or 100baseT network card in each computer that will be accessing
the Internet over the DSL connection.
Many computers already have a network card installed, however for those
computers that don't already have a network card, they can purchased at
most any computer store. Optional
installation is also available, see the DSL Pricing Guide for
more information.
To hook up more than one computer to the DSL connection, an Ethernet hub
will also be required. Hubs are also available at most computer stores.
The Efficient 2614 or 2624 that is available through Alltel will also
act as a four port hub.
DSL Line Charges
The telephone company charges DSL fees in addition to those of your
standard phone line. These charges start at $29.95/month for 1.5M.
Complete pricing information is available in our DSL Pricing Guide
Note that these charges are in addition to your regular phone line costs.
Since many of you are currently paying nearly $30/month for a second phone
line and access fees that are no longer required, the price difference is
smaller than it appears at first.
Internet Service Charges
Internet Nebraska will be offering the Internet access portion of the DSL
service for the same price as our single month flat-rate dial-in
connection, just $19.95/month for 1.5M. We have always tried to bring
the best services to our customers at the best prices, and our aggressive
DSL pricing is no exception. Other speeds and commercial plans are also
available, see the DSL Pricing Guide for complete descriptions and
pricing.
