*** (Web)Space: The Final Frontier ***
We're frequently asked about what is involved in getting a web page for one's
personal use, and many of our customers are surprised to learn that they
already have free space reserved for them just by virtue of being on our
system. If you point your browser to www.inetnebr.com/~username or
incolor.inetnebr.com/username (same thing), you'll see a default page with your
name at the top and some links which point to other things on our main page.
You are free to make your page look however you want, and this article is meant
to provide you with some help doing that. Additional information can be found
at http://www.inetnebr.com/help/webpage/
Creating a web page or web site is easiest with the aid of some specialized
software. Although a simple text editor (like Notepad) can be used to
create virtually any web page, we wouldn't recommend it for the beginner.
Beginners might want to try the newest versions of Microsoft Word or MS
Publisher for creating their first web pages. Although cumbersome and
not especially speedy for web pages, they can't be beaten for ease of use.
As you experience with web page creation grows, you'll want to check out
some of the excellent programs available designed specifically for creating
web pages. Some of the the most popular tools are:
(For Windows)
HoTMetaL Pro
http://www.sq.com/products/hotmetal/hm-ftp.htm
Hotdog Professional (Windows 95)
http://www.sausage.com/download/dl_hotdogpro.html
Hotdog 16bit (Windows 3.1)
http://www.sausage.com/download/dl_hotdog16.html
(For Macintosh)
HTML.edit
http://www.altheim.com/equinox/htmledit/
HTML Pro
http://www.acc.umu.se/~r2d2/files/HTML_Pro_info.html
Many commercial web developing programs are also available. Look for
Claris Homepage, Microsoft Frontpage, Adobe Pagemill, and many others
at computer software retailers.
These programs should give you enough to get you started designing your own
web page. As you get more advanced, you'll want to learn more about the
HTML language so you can edit your pages more directly.
We recommend the book "Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML 4 in a Week"
(by Laura Lemay, Sams Publishing, ISBN 1-57521-336-2), or the book "HTML:
The Definitive Guide. 2nd Edition" (by Chuck Musciano & Bill Kennedy,
O'Reilly & Associates, ISBN 1-56592-235-2).
HTML documentation is also available on the Web at
http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Internet/WWW/HTMLPrimer.html
After you have finished designing your web page, you will need to upload
your HTML files to the Internet Nebraska server. To do this you will need
to download and install an ftp (short for "File Transfer Protocol")
program. The most commonly used ftp programs are WS_FTP and Cute FTP for
Windows and Fetch for Macintosh, all of which are available for
downloading from the Internet Nebraska Software page.
(Windows 95 comes with a built-in ftp program which you can access by
typing "ftp hostname" at the command prompt. However, it uses a somewhat
archaic command-based interface, rather than the usual graphical interface
most Windows 95 users are accustomed to. For most users, we recommend
downloading and installing one of the graphical "point and click" programs
mentioned above.)
Whichever ftp program you use, you will need the following information
to log in and transfer files:
Username: [Your username, without the capital P]
Password: [Your password]
Host name: ftp.inetnebr.com
Enter the above information and connect to the server. After you have
logged in, simply copy the html files (including your index.html file)
from your PC to the pubhtml directory on the remote system.
The particular method used to copy files differs from program to
program. For example, in WS-FTP, highlight the files you want to copy,
then click the appropriate arrow; in Cute FTP, drag and drop the files you
want to copy; in Fetch, click the "put" button to transfer (or put) files
into the remote directory or the "get" button to transfer (or get) files
from it.
The files must be copied to the pubhtml directory on the remote system.
(Of course, you can add as many "subdirectories" as you like, so long as
you can keep track of them in your html files.) Either change to the
pubhmtl directory after you are connected, or configure your ftp program
to start in the pubhtml directory. Again, the particulars differ from
program to program. In WS_FTP, you can set up multiple "profiles," each
with different startup directories and/or usernames. Similarly, Cute FTP
allows the user to configure multiple "Personal FTP Sites." In Fetch, the
initial directory is defined on the Connection screen.
Once your html files have been uploaded to the pubhtml directory, you are
finished. To view your handiwork, load up your browser and point it to
your web page: incolor.inetnebr.com/username
A common problem to watch out for:
"Case sensitivity" -- Windows, DOS and Mac-based computers do not make the
distinction between upper and lower case letters sufficiently well. For
example, in Windows, TUMMY.JPG, Tummy.jpg and tummy.jpg would all refer to the
same file. However, UNIX (the operating system used by our server) is
case-sensitive, and the file names mentioned above refer to three different
files. So, if your index.htm file refers to a file called tummy.jpg, but the
actual file name is TUMMY.JPG, the world will not be able to see your tummy.
*** Student Account Suspensions ***
Those of you students heading home for the summer who will not have local
dial-up access may want to suspend your accounts until you return in the fall.
We normally require 30 days notice for account deactivation, but we realize how
hectic life gets as finals week approaches, and we're a pretty lenient lot
anyway. Drop us a line requesting your account be "turned off" for the summer,
starting at your next renewal date. We'll see that you don't incur charges for
the months you can't enjoy the service. Past due balances will not be
suspended, however, so you might ask about your balance when you request
deactivation.
If you're going to be in the areas of Omaha, O'Neill, Valentine, York, Beatrice
or Sioux City, you'll be able to log in the same as always. Phone numbers for
these locations are available at http://www.inetnebr.com/access.html
Write accounts@inetnebr.com, or give us a call at 434-8680 to request your
account be "summerized."
*** Hard Drive Spring Cleaning ***

Internet software and updating your frequently used software to the
latest and greatest version? Here are links to the most current version
